Three barrels in a fan, all firing forward at once. It's the Duet line's answer to "I want everything pointed at the thing in front of me", with a wide arc that makes farming easy.

The Trident fires three bullets per volley, two volleys a second: six bullets a second in total, the same damage per bullet as a Duet roughly, spread across a 90° arc. Only the middle barrel points where you aim. The other two point 45° to each side.
That arc is the class. Against a single target at range, only your centre barrel hits, and you're doing about 13 damage a second, which is worse than the Duet you came from. The side barrels fly out from your body at 45°, so they only touch a lone tank that's pressed right up against you. Against one enemy, the Trident is a one-barrel tank with extra recoil. It wants lots of targets.
Lots of targets is where it shines. Walk into a field of shapes and the fan hits three of them at once without you aiming at each. Nothing at tier 3 farms a spread-out shape field more easily. The same goes for fights with several enemies in front of you, or a swarm of drones coming in: the side barrels cover the flanks while the centre does the aimed work.
The recoil is heavier than it was on Duet. Three barrels kick at once, and while the side kicks cancel sideways, all three push you backwards. Each volley is about 2.4 times a Recruit shot, twice a second. You drift backwards steadily while firing, so walk into your target to hold your ground.
The Trident beats groups. Two enemies spread out in front of you can both be under fire at once, one on the centre barrel and one on a side barrel. Drone classes like Shepherd send drones in from different angles, and the fan catches them in a way a single barrel can't. It's comfortable against rammers too, because anything that gets into contact with you finally eats the side barrels as well as the centre one.
It loses to a single target at long range: a Nightfall or Sighthound sitting at 600 px or more is out of your reach, and even inside 331 px you only have one barrel on it. It loses a duel to anything that focuses all its damage on one line, like a Volley that gets in range.
