Shapes and crashers

Wiki › Shapes and crashers

Shapes are where your score comes from, and some are worth a lot more of your time than others. This page has every shape's numbers, where each one lives, and what those numbers mean for how you farm.

Every shape

Each shape comes in three sizes, and there's one giant "alpha" version of each. The last column is the one to pay attention to: how much score you get for each point of health you chew through. It's the honest measure of how good a shape is to farm, because the time it takes you to break something is set by its HP.

Two things stand out. The small pentagon is the best shape in the game by a clear margin: 130 score for 100 HP. And the medium square is the worst by a clear margin: 65 score for 160 HP. It's the most common thing you'll see that isn't worth shooting.

How many there are

At the map's starting size there are 375 small, 250 medium and 93 large squares, 112 small, 75 medium and 28 large triangles, and 44 small, 29 medium and 11 large pentagons. Squares are about two-thirds of everything on the map. Pentagons are under a tenth, and they're all packed into the middle.

Those counts move. In free-for-all the arena grows with the player count, from 6,500 px a side up to 13,000, and the shape count grows with the area so the density stays about the same. Quiet lobbies also get a bonus: with fewer than six players the server spawns up to 40% more shapes than normal, tapering off as the lobby fills. If you're farming alone on a quiet server, the map really is richer than on a busy one.

How shapes behave

They don't wander

Shapes spin in place and otherwise sit still. They only move when something pushes them: your tank, a bullet, another shape. A pushed shape slides and slows down fast, keeping about 3% of its speed per second, and it can't be knocked faster than 160 px/s. Shapes bounce off the arena edge and push each other apart, so a cluster you shove into stays a cluster.

They come back instantly

When you break a shape, a new one of the same kind appears the same moment, somewhere random on the map. Pentagons respawn back in the nest. There's no cooldown and no delay. The map never runs dry, and farming a spot out doesn't hurt anyone's supply, including yours. It just means walking to the next patch.

The alphas are the exception. There's only ever one of each. None exists when a lobby starts, each one appears 45 seconds in, and when one breaks the next of that kind appears 45 seconds later.

They hurt to touch, all of them equally

Every shape deals the same contact damage, whatever its size or colour: 2 HP per tick while you're touching it, 30 ticks a second. Your tank deals 40% of its Body Damage stat back per tick. A Recruit with no points in Body Damage has 20, so 8 per tick.

That means ramming a small square costs you about 4 HP. Ramming a small pentagon costs about 26, which is more than half of a level-1 Recruit's 50 HP. The shape also shoves you away on every touch, so in practice you bounce off and come back. Ramming is a real way to farm on a rammer build. On anything else, shoot.

Bullets, penetration and drones against shapes

Every bullet has a penetration value, and every shape it passes through costs some of it. When the value runs out, the bullet is gone. The damage falls with it: a bullet that has used up half its penetration deals half damage to the next thing it hits.

A bullet starts with 2 penetration and gains 1.5 per point in Bullet Penetration, up to 12. A small square costs about 1.2 of that, a small triangle about 1.4 and a small pentagon about 3.4. A medium pentagon costs about 10, and anything large or alpha costs 33 or more, which stops every bullet in the game on the spot.

What that means for your build:

Drones work differently. Each of your drones that's touching a shape takes 0.4 HP off it per tick, 12 HP a second, and that number doesn't change with your Drone Damage stat. A full swarm of eight drones on one shape is 96 HP a second. Revenant is the exception: it absorbs squares into its swarm on contact instead of breaking them, and an absorbed square pays no score.

The nest and the alpha pentagon

Every pentagon on the map, all three sizes, spawns within 950 px of the centre. That circle is the nest, and it's the richest ground in the game. The alpha pentagon sits right in the middle of it, within about 120 px of the exact centre.

The nest isn't free. The crashers orbit the centre on a ring about 750 px out, which runs straight through it. Everybody else knows the nest is there too. The nest is where you go once you can handle a crasher and an opportunist, not where you go at level 3.

The alphas pay exactly one score per HP, the same as a small square. What they offer is a big number from one target: 3,000 score, 12% of the way from level 1 to level 45. The catch is that score goes to whoever lands the killing hit. Chewing an alpha down to 200 HP with another player nearby is how you hand them 3,000 score. Only start an alpha when you can finish it, or when nobody is close enough to steal it.

Crashers

Crashers are pink, and they're not shapes, even though they look like them. They're hunters. Up to 14 roam the arena at once (more once a free-for-all map has grown), with a new one spawning every 3 seconds until the limit is reached. They spawn on a ring about 750 px from the centre, a little further out on a grown map, and circle the middle when they have nothing to chase.

CrasherHPDamage per hitScore
Small triangle40745
Large triangle7511110
Small square40745
Medium square7511110

A crasher locks on to the nearest visible tank within 520 px of it, player or bot, and chases it at 210 px/s. It can hit you once every 0.4 seconds, and each time it hits you it takes your full Body Damage back. A fully faded stealth tank is invisible to them.

Crashers are worth killing, but only with bullets or drones. A crasher you kill by ramming pays nothing, and neither does one ground down on your traps. Shot down, a large crasher pays 110, which is almost a full pentagon's worth for 75 HP. At 1.47 score per HP a big crasher is actually a better farm than the pentagon, it just comes at you instead of waiting.

The boss Leviathan launches squadrons of these same crashers, and they count toward the same limit of 14.

From score to levels

Your level comes from your total score and nothing else. The curve is steep at the start and flattens out, so early levels come fast and the last ones are a grind.

You get one stat point per level up to 28, then one more at each of levels 30, 33, 36, 39, 42 and 45, for 33 in total. Score keeps counting past 25,000, but your level stops there.

To put the numbers in shapes: 25,000 score is 2,500 small squares, 193 small pentagons, a bit over 10 large pentagons or about 8 alphas. A single boss kill pays 24,000 to 30,000 on its own, which is why the last-hit fights around bosses get ugly. When you die you keep half your score and start again from a Recruit, and your level is worked out from what's left.
