Leviathan

Wiki › Bosses › Leviathan

A teal pentagon ringed with five turrets that launches squadrons of crashers at you. Leviathan is a carrier: most of its danger arrives as pink shapes flying out of it, not as bullets.

What it does

Leviathan kites. It holds about 700 px from the nearest player and moves at 101 px/s, the slowest of the kiting bosses. That distance matters, because its guns don't reach that far. The front cannon runs out at about 530 px and the five turrets at about 560 px. At the distance Leviathan prefers, you're outside its guns.

The crashers are what reach you. When you're within 1,250 px and the launch is ready, it slows, turns to face you and glows pink for 0.9 seconds, then throws out a fan of five crashers aimed at you. They're the same crashers that roam the middle of the map: pink triangles and squares that ram whatever they can find. The small ones have 40 HP and hit for 7. The big ones have 75 HP and hit for 11. They move at 210 px/s and can hit you again every 0.4 seconds. Leviathan launches a new squadron every 7 to 9 seconds.

There's a detail in how crashers hunt that changes the whole fight. A crasher only locks on to something within 520 px of itself. Anything further away doesn't exist to it, and it drifts off to circle the middle of the map like any wild crasher. A squadron launched at you from 700 px starts about 645 px away. It doesn't see you. It only comes for you if you're within about 575 px of Leviathan when it launches, or if you wander into range of it afterwards.

The launch also shares a limit with the map. There can be at most 14 crashers counted together, wild ones included, so when the middle of the map is already crawling with them, the squadron comes out short or doesn't come out at all.

Reading the tells

The launch wind-up is a pink glow, the same pink as a crasher, with a pink ring closing in on the body over 0.9 seconds. Leviathan slows almost to a stop while it charges and points itself at you. The fan leaves from the side of the body facing you, spread over roughly 50°.

The tell gives you the choice the fight is built around. If you're close when you see pink, you have 0.9 seconds to get out past about 575 px so the squadron launches blind. If you can't, turn your gun on the fan the moment it appears. The crashers are packed together as they leave, and it's the one moment they're easy to hit as a group.

How to fight it

Solo

Fight at the distance Leviathan wants. From 600 to 700 px its guns can't reach you, and its crashers launch too far away to see you. That leaves you shooting a slow boss that doesn't shoot back. You need a gun that reaches 700 px: Vantage with two points of Bullet Speed, Nightfall or Apex out of the box. A normal-speed gun with all seven points in Bullet Speed reaches about 680 px, which works if you sit at the near end of that band. Leviathan backs off as you advance, so don't creep forward. Let it hold the distance for you.

Keep an eye on old crashers. Squadrons that didn't lock on circle the middle of the map, and if the fight drifts toward the centre you'll walk into range of them. Shoot them when they come, because each one pays 45 or 110 score, which adds up over a long fight.

If your gun is short-ranged, you're fighting inside everything at once: cannon, turrets and live crashers. Spray classes handle that best, because crashers die fast to volume. Deluge and Autovolley can clear a squadron and keep firing on the boss.

Drone classes

This is the best boss for a drone class, for one reason: crashers are worth score when your drones kill them, and your drones will chase them on their own. A Hivelord or Dreadnought can farm every squadron and still send the rest of its swarm at the body. Max Drone Penetration: a standard drone loses about 5.1 penetration per hit on Leviathan's body, so at zero it lands one hit and at the maximum it lands three.

Rammers

Ramming a crasher kills it, but a crasher killed by ramming pays nothing. Only bullets and drones earn crasher score. A Bastion can plough through a squadron safely enough. It just doesn't gain anything from it.

In a group

Each crasher goes for whatever is nearest to it, players and bots alike. It doesn't care who Leviathan was targeting. So the player closest to the boss when it launches gets the squadron. Put the player with the best crowd control closest, and let the others shoot the boss from 600 px or more.

When it enrages

At 1,875 HP Leviathan enrages once. A shockwave shoves everyone within 360 px and deals 12 damage, a red aura starts pulsing, and a launch follows within half a second.

For the next 60 seconds it launches ten crashers at a time instead of five, still inside the 14-crasher limit, and the launch cooldown runs 1.9 times faster, so a squadron comes every 4 seconds or so. It moves 22% faster, which makes it harder to catch if you've been fighting it close.

The hazards come with it: four solid damaging zones every 3 seconds within 130 px of the player Leviathan is targeting, each hitting for 10 and lasting 5.5 seconds. For a player sitting at 650 px with a sniper, the hazards are the only real change, so keep moving along an arc rather than backing straight up. For a player fighting close, it's time to back out past 575 px and let the bigger squadrons launch at nothing.

The enrage ends after 60 seconds and doesn't return.
